about

"Wronger Than Everyone Else" is the title of IN FLAGRANTI's first full length album from 2006. After a productive 2005-06 season with numerous 12" vinyl releases, IN FLAGRANTI edited the 17 album tracks together into another mix/edit like the previous one called "A Decade of Hero Worship" also avaliable in our Bandcamp shop.

In Flagranti is New York-based Sasha Crnobrnja and Alex Gloor, and this is their first full-length album. After a productive 2005-06 year with six 12" vinyl EPs, In Flagranti now release this record which compiles all the tracks from the now hard-to-find vinyl 12"s, with additional unreleased tracks on one CD. Wronger Than Everyone Else is difficult to pin down, though critics have compared In Flagranti with acts such as !!!, Daft Punk, The Rapture... or as one club promoter placed them, "New York's funkiest exponent of the ever-growing disco-punk revival." What the two members share is the simultaneous discovery of the Italian cosmic scene from the late '70s/early '80s electro: a scene that blended aspects of disco, Afro-rock, funk and dub. Especially with the start of Alex and Sasha's label Codek Records, their aim is to assemble different elements of art/graphic design and styles of music into a seamless flow, which ultimately led them to create In Flagranti, an act that would reflect and continue to explore the endless possibilities of a "cut and paste" aesthetic. From the electronic disco sound of Giorgio Moroder and Patrick Cowley to the punk funk of Liquid Liquid, A Certain Ratio and more contemporary sounds of today's dance music, Wronger Than Everyone Else is an erotic and humorous collage of all of the above. Already graced with bone fide underground club hits such as "Nonplusultra" and "We Make Love In a House Made of Glass," and with Time Out NY voting them as one of the Best in 2005, it looks like In Flagranti could be the wrongest rightest thing to originate in NYC for quite some time.

You might remember Switzerland’s own In Flagranti's ‘Just Gazing’ gracing Ivan Smagghe’s seminal ‘How To Kill the DJ’ mix from a few years ago. It was dark, mysterious, bass-heavy, even languorous stuff Headman would still be proud of today. Then, on last year’s ‘Bang Bang’, they entered full-on Italo-disco mode (with a fitting Ajello remix), while vaguely impersonating !!! shortly after on ‘We Make Love in a House Made of Glass’. Needless to say, In Flagranti are a hard act to follow. Now they've established themselves in NYC and are releasing ‘Wronger Than Anyone Else’, their first album. The collage effect of the full-length – all the songs are tied up to one another, never leaving any time for the listeners to catch their breath – is a bit unsettling at first, although it does make sense after a while, in a let’s-listen-to-The-Rapture-high-on-methamphetamines kinda way. Highlights are the aforementioned ‘Bang Bang’ and single ‘Genital Blue Room’ (err, what?), all hyped-up and dancey numbers, and the Chic-lite of ‘Uncanny Hinting’ and ‘Escapade’ that close the album. That said, you can’t help but feel theses pieces of angular disco-punk basslines we love have all been done recently already, and to greater effect. Not that In Flagranti are wronger, but this, unfortunately, sure feels later than anyone else.
