MODE – Lo Fi Odyssey
East London based writer/producer MODE has had an infatuation with music since he first sat at the piano aged just 4 years old. From this introduction in early childhood, music became an integral part of his life. A proficient pianist and percussionist, he left home aged 18 to study Classical Music at Goldsmiths College in London. Here he was exposed to new sounds and cultures stretching far beyond his classical background. After university, and having discovered a love of electronic music, MODE began writing and experimenting with various styles. Frustrated by technological limitations, he undertook a diploma in Audio Engineering to learn more about recording and production techniques. This has allowed him greater creative control and the ability to formulate and develop a distinctive sound, whilst his traditional background ensures deep harmonies, evocative melodies and solid structural writing in his work. Lo Fi Odyssey marks MODE’s first official release. The track is an entirely original piece and grew from the rolling rhodes chord progression, stumbled across whilst jamming late at night. Having laid down the rhodes with a driving beat and syncopated baseline the rest of the track is constructed layer upon layer achieving a full, rich texture all wrapped up in analogue warmth. The title is derived from two vital elements of the track. The harmonic foundation lies in the distorted ‘Lo Fi Rhodes’ whilst the hypnotic solo melody is performed on a 1970s vintage ‘Arp Odyssey’ synthesiser. Lo Fi Odyssey is the amalgamation of the two. This title felt even more appropriate when considering the links between the track and the story of ‘The Odyssey’. The structure and compositional technique of ‘theme and development’ reflect those implemented in Homer’s epic poem. The idea of the track being a journey is highlighted further by the sampling of a train passing by the window of the flat in Hackney where it was written.

Electric Fling Vol. 3 presents Brioski feat. Sverfine – Show Biz
Codek’s “Electric Fling” series returns with Volume. 3, this time headed by a new artist on the label, Brioski, whose brought along his pal Svperfine, all the way from Milan, Italy. “Show Biz” is the result of their collaboration. Heavily influenced by Italo-disco, it’s a track definitely designed for the dancefloor – this rocks with a capitol peak-time, fist-pumping, hands-aloft vibe! Codek main men In Flagranti get in on the act with a wicked electro-daance / acid house version which also hits that spot. The ‘Rio Lobotomy Abducted Version’ is a tad slower, but equally good. Completing the four out of four hit rate New Yorker Son Of Sound delivers a boogie-tinted version which we’re also loving. – piccadillyrecords.com

MODE – Lo Fi Odyssey
MODE is a musician from London who at first impressions makes some of the most chilled pieces of music to date and this is an exception. There are many remixes for this release from In Flagranti to Peter Herbert giving you their takes on the track. Also I would like to comment on the video having a very strange Andy Warhol-esq feel that certainly matches the music that accompanies it. Yeah I’m aware of the nudity aspect of it and funnily enough Codek’s official Youtube channel has been flagged due to the nudity portrayed from their bottomless source material but come on, it fits into a context, it’s not like its porn or something Youtube, its just nudity! Looking forward to this one when it gets released as I delve deeper into the slower offerings from Codek and adding it to my personal playlist of tunes. – nerdy-frames.org

MODE – Lo Fi Odyssey

A cheeky reworking of Frankie Goes To Hollywood aside, all has been a bit quiet at Codek central of late, which is odd because there was a moment in 2010 when In Flagranti seemed to be on a remix or single release every week. The duo have clearly spent the time out of the spotlight well, grooming some new talent in the shape of East London newcomer MODE.
Presented under thesame Electric Fling banner as the awesome and strangely under rated release with Rory Phillips and G & S, MODE’s debut release comes in the sprawling analogue delight of “Lo Fi Odyssey”. Set at a pace which will please the slo mo disco fans, this track astounds with the richness of sonic texture. The languid beat is wrapped in a multiplicity of melodic touches from warm piano brushes to twilight Rhodes flourishes and like all memorable compositions slips through several subtle rhythmic shifts across its eight minute duration.
In Flagranti themselves are the first to rework “Lo Fi Odyssey”, marrying the pensive piano touches to typically raw syncopation, with the upwards shift in pace complemented by some heavy Detroit style washes and a rough bassline for a refreshingly different sound from the duo. Opting to explore the ethereal capacities of the original, The Stallions (Lovefingers and Lee Douglas) drown the Rhodes melodies in hypnotic delay and add layers of sitar and subtle cowbell for a richly rewarding remix. Maxidisc boss and all round disco impresario Pete Herbert is on hand to steer proceedings back towards the dancefloor with a remix which is propelled by a massive arpeggiated synth bassline. This is one of those releases where everyone involved excels.

MODE – Lo Fi Odyssey

East London based writer/producer MODE, makes his debut on In Flagranti’s Codek label, with Lo Fi Odyssey. Get ready for some slo-mo house and supersexy nu-disco vibes… Lo Fi Odyssey may be MODE’s first official release, but listening to it reveals the man’s talent for creating dubby, slow-moving house fueled by warm Rhodes bass. It’s a bit disco in a way, yet it unmistakable draws on the warm elements of authentic house music across a patetrn of slow-paced beats. The original mix of Lo Fi Odyssey is deep and sensual mix of sexy synthesizers, warm disco elements and a touch of jazzy drums here and there. Very nice, very chilled and impressive as a whole. The In Flagranti Mix turns to a more techno orientated structure while retaining the warm elements from the original. The result is a funky Detroit mix featuring a wide variety of drums while the heavy bass and disco synths form a remarkably solid combination. The remix by The Stallions is a haunting, ambient-esque adventure with a few oriental vibes and a slow beat near the end, while the absolute highlight of this EP is saved for last: the massive disco stomper that is Pete Herbert’s mix. This one’s a superhot, charming and god damn funky cut that will set any floor on fire. MODE’s debut EP is a very original and diverse package that will grasp the attention of DJs from various backgrounds. Well worth your cash we say. Written by Youri Jozee

ELECTRIC FLING VOL. 1 – (CRE.026 – VINYL 12″)

1. Portable Control – G & S (Matt Waites and Nadia Ksaiba)
2. Solar Breakfast – Rory Phillips
3. Erector Set – In Flagranti

Video by Alex Gloor

Electric Fling is the result of a jam session during a dinner party in London sometimes in january 2009. As we were banging on cowbells and twisting knobs on a synth, it was all recorded on multitrack. After the session, everyone had a copy of the recording and came up with a version. Over the summer, we had the chance to play them in various clubs around the globe, with great response.

French label records. They always come with very sparse sales notes, often making little sense. The notes for this Codek EP tell me ‘Basically the recording happened during a dinner in London where they recorded percussion, synth etc… then each of them made a different mix of it’. I’m guessing that means In Flagranti, G&S and Rory Phillips got together to make a track (perhaps not during dinner!), then went their separate ways with the parts and came up with three different reworks. So we have G&S “Portable Control”, a driving, percussive electrodisco cut that sounds too slow at 33rpm and way too fast at 45. You’ll be getting busy with the pitch control on this. Rory Phillips comes up with the mix of the EP, the romping hiNRG style “Solar Breakfast”. Lastly Codek regulars In Flagranti get lowdown and dirty on the sleazoid “Erector Set”, which pushes the throbbing acid bassline and plinky plonky pots and pans percussion.
