about

I met Fred Jorio back in 1992 in New York City when we both worked for the same Record Label, he was producing music under the name LECTROLUV and i was doing graphic design including the logo for Eightball Record.

In the 80s we lived in the same building in the east village for a few years. During my regular visits to New York in the past few years i would see Fred in the hallway of our building on east 4th street and we would have a chat, at some point he send me these BBF tracks and we liked them but didn’t have a place to put them or release them. Well things have changed this year, dance music is not in high demand anymore so we’re releasing this, we hope you enjoy this as much as we do.

BBF Bio

BBF is an Electronic Avant-garde trio consisting of longtime friends Brooks Williams, Ben Morales, and Frederick Jorio. Their sound is rooted in improvisation, combining the modern with the retro whilst stretching the sense of tonality. The trio have been recording their improvisational jams since 2006 at the prestigious Harmonic Ranch Studio in Tribeca, NYC.

Computer mastermind Brooks Williams, (keyboards, drum programs and bass) plays his Abelton Live sequencing program like a musical instrument providing quirky beats, ambient textures, and unorthodox keyboard lines. Guitar Innovator Beo Morales, (Guitar and Guitar Synthesizer) works with a vast array of sampled sounds, triggered loops and soft synths to go along with his Jazz inspired guitar, combining lyrical phrasing, dynamic rhythms and moody textures. Frederick Jorio, (bass, analogue synths and electric guitar) provides foundational bass lines and brings a retro element, working the filters and arpeggio generator on his vintage Sequential Circuits Pro One Synthesizer.

The BBF approach to improvisation is to react to each others motifs, beats or sounds, creating a conversation between the instruments that shift dynamically and tonally. Some of the pieces are beat or groove based, others are more abstract sound collages or ambient tone poems. Some of their work has improvised vocals as well.

After they record the live jams, the second phase of the recording process is the editing, which takes place at the infamous Lectroluv Studio NYC. Thats where the best of the extended pieces are then shortened, tightened and finally mixed. Only original elements from the improvisations are used to keep its authenticity. Overdubs are sacrilege in the world of BBF.

BBF have been conducting informal recording sessions bimonthly for 15 years. The project has always been about experimentation, without boundaries, created organically without any ambitious agenda and with no specific audience in mind. The result of their efforts, is a unique unvarnished sound, that contradicts the norms of what commercial music should sound like, and that takes a listener to new places they have never been.
